Simple Step To Move Server

Published by msaufong at 6:47 am under Hosting, Webmaster

Here is the simple step to move server. Step is easy but the backup, download and upload file from old server to new server is take time, and have to wait for a correct time to set DNS setting.

Backup all the file in the old server, I only know how to use ftp to backup the file. I will download all the file to my PC.

Upload all the necessary file to new server first.

Backup the database. See how to backup database using phpmyadmin here.

Change the DNS at Domain registered account after you confirmed have backup all the file in old server and uploaded all necessary file to the new server. For me, I prefer to move my server in holiday time or the time I do not need to online for at least 1 or 2 days.

    Is it really that easy?

I just bought a bigger webhosting service and plan to move other domains there. But I’m a little worry about the sql database because I need to move 3 blogs from 1 server to another. I might risk losing my data because blog installation depends on sql database.

    Will it be affected?

Hi, thanks for remind me. I have missed another important step! backup the sql then import to new database. I am going to update in my blog once I write the post.

While the steps outlined above make it seem easy, it’s by no means easy.

You need to take into account everything that can go wrong in a move and make sure you protect against it. Even then there’s always something unexpected that will pop up.

Another easier way, if your new and old host is cPanel is by creating a full backup.

    1. Backup can be created by clicking Backup icon, then “Generate/Download a Full Backup”.
    2. Once done, upload it into your new hosting account.
    3. Ask the admin to restore the backup file.

Alternatively, you can extract the backup using winRAR (because its a .tar.gz file) and upload it your self. This way, you’ll have all the cPanel settings and also your files and database.

If you’re transferring your account to us, we’ll do it for free :)
